Air Support

As the crew continued with the exhausting task of cleaning the ground of precarious elements, they received assistance from an Hércules C-130 which parachuted 48 bulks with food, medicines, explosive material, wheelbarrows, tools, pickaxes, spades, tents, clothes and the desired mail which encouraged and made Soberanía Patrol more vigorous.
In order to give important support to the operations, the veteran twin-engine C-47 registration TA-05 fulfilled a new exploit crossing to the White Continent with a sky-wheel system, until in 27th September 1969, coming from Matienzo it landed on Marambio with wheels when the airstrip under construction was only 400m long.
It was commanded by one of the heroes of Antarctic epics: the Lieutenant Colonel Mario Luis OLEZZA who was Chief of the Air Antarctic Task.
The "Twin Otter" registration # T-85 biturboprop with its fixed landing gear and ski-wheel system fulfilled similar missions to the TA-05, landing for first time on Marambio under Captain Juan Ramón CAMBIASSO command on 9th October 1969.
They continued building the airstrip. When it was 900m long and 25m wide it was signposted and making a final effort to build a parking area for several planes was cleared from rocks and stones.
